Creating a Cleaner, Greener Environment

Header

Why is this a priority for Rochdale Borough

The quality of the local environment and tackling global environmental issues is a high priority for residents. Rochdale Borough is one of the greenest parts of Greater Manchester with some of the most visited areas of natural beauty and ecological value but only 22% of households have close access to good quality green space.

  • Public satisfaction with cleanliness of streets is only 65% and fly-tipping, graffiti and needles are particular problems in deprived neighbourhoods
  • 14% of pavements need repair.
  • Our eco-footprint is 2.8 which means if everyone in the world lived like we do, we would need 2.8 planet’s worth of resources.
  • Just over half (50.24%) of vulnerable households in the private sector live in non decent homes. There are proven links between poor housing, poor health and poor educational attainment.

What is the focus of this priority?

To promote and develop through partnership working a high quality environment which is developed sensitively, valued and protected.

  • We have upgraded the environment of some housing estates and deprived areas. We have spent £17m on measures to achieve Decent Homes Standard of the public housing stock. - as a result 6100 improvements/alterations have been made to RBH homes.
  • Bringing woodlands into our neighbourhoods through Pennine Edge Forest.
  • The borough is now connected to the national cycle network.

How will this priority acheived?

  • We will improve the facilities for young people.
  • We will improve the design and quality of our housing stock.
  • We will increase the number of homes in the private rented sector occupied by vulnerable people that reach decent standards.
  • We will increase recycling and take further action towards tackling climate change, including promoting energy efficiency and reducing fuel poverty.
  • We will bring Metrolink to Rochdale Town Centre and promote public transport.
  • We will build a new bus station in Rochdale and also complete a network of Quality Bus Corridors.
  • We will improve road safety and ensure that all schools and major employers promote healthy, safe and sustainable travel.
